"A lot of my work is stimulated by travel, journeys ... I first started painting after a trip to Central North Queensland, The Leichhardt River, where I fell in love with the ... well, everything ... from the way the road bisects the horizon, the way the fences define the landscape, the gates, the imposition of man, changing the landscape into land ... to the colours, shapes, atmosphere ... other journeys have led to a series of black & white prints based on the 53 stages of the Tokaido (the Eastern Sea Road between Tokyo & Kyoto): time spent in Brittany which changed my colour palette again ... in 1997 Iwas part of a group of artists and writers travelling, drawing, painting, through Menindee, Broken Hill, Mutawindji, Tibooburra ... this trip re-awakened images from my first journey, allowing me to explore more fully the visual impact of the land on my work. That 1997 experience has become a constant source for this continuing series of paintings and drawings ...
